There are as many reasons for rescue as there are people who own a basset. Often a dog may be relinquished because an owner can no longer take care of their pet due to death, divorce, or another major life change.
Here are three happy hounds who were rescued by BBR – one because her parent died and no one in the family could take her, one came from a basset breeder where she had lived for seven years, and one was relinquished due to behavior issues.
Basset Buddies Rescue asks you to help our hounds! In 2005, more than 150 dogs were placed in a forever home by BBR.
| Madeline is a 2-3 year old basset who was abandoned. She was soon hit by a car and suffered multiple pelvic fractures. The fractures were in an area of the pelvis that did not require surgery but she needed a good place to rest and heal for weeks or even months. It was impossible to tell how much she would recover. Would she be able to walk again? Would her right rear leg need to be amputated? The small shelter in the town where she was found could not provide this long-term care and they would have been forced to euthanize this sweet little basset girl. | |||||
| Fortunately they were able to connect with Basset Buddies Rescue where a foster home is currently helping her to recover. A week after her injury, Madeline had limited response to pain in her left leg and almost no response or reflex in her right leg. Only 2 weeks later Madeline is now starting to stand on all four legs and even take a few steps. Neurological function in both legs is greatly improved. We are very hopeful that she will continue to improve and regain most, if not all of her mobility. | |||||
